How the blend door on an 04 sits in there.  One of the guys broke his.

Dave what's the TSB on this?  Isn't there a parts kit that can be ordered from the dealership to replace?

CChapman if you've still got warranty left call Enumclaw Dodge!

What exactly is broken and what does it do?  I couldn't control the temp on mine and didn't feel like fiddling with the electronic stuff so I took it in to have it diagnosed, was told it was a blend door and it would be 1200 bucks to fix it, I ordered the blend door and tore it all apart, wasn't the door so I have an extra.

I like step one, remove the HVAC unit.  You have to take the A/C lines off (so you have to take all the refrigerant out) and the heater core lines so you also have to drain your coolant, also the dash is in the way, here are some pics from when I tore mine apart.

And here was what I thought was the culprit:

Once you get the HVAC out it is really easy to work on, step 1 however is no fun.

Mine the motor would just spin in circles and broke the piece a second time a week later, but good news is you can get to the motor and with a little modification you can get it and the plastic piece in and out without removing the dash or HVAC unit.

Well they quoted 1200 so I figured I'd give it a try.  I did it for under 150 and that includes a new motor, coolant, and refrigerant and it still works a year later.

Dare I ask how long it took to tear the dash apart?
Is this a part within the blower motor?  Can I just tear it apart throw in a new blower motor?

FYI- In the 3rd generation Ram forums, I have a thread posted about a heater issue and a member directed me here!  Thanks for any help!

This part is not within the blower motor, the blower motor is easily replaced.  This part is a little harder. Taking the dash out of the truck is no easy task.  Chrysler pays a warranty rate of 1.6 hours  That means the techs only gets paid 1 hour and 36 minutes to do the whole job.

Dave what's the TSB on this?  Isn't there a parts kit that can be ordered from the dealership to replace.

Not a TSB but a "Service Repair Tip"

"If the HVAC Recirculation Door is broken, replace the Heater and A/C Unit Case Assembly (p/n 68004226AB), instead of just replacing the door. The 68004226AB assembly has a door stop that prevents the door from being damaged from over travel. The 2006 DR/DH/D1 vehicles started using the HVAC with door stops in June 2006."

The part number is 68004226ab and sells for about $45.00

Pulling my hair out, what a load of crap  :banging:  I am pretty sure a few of the guys have diagnosed it as the blend door.  It blows air so the blower is working.  Heater core isn't plugged.
I can change from the dash to the vent and to the floor but I don't have any heat.  Is this still indicative of the blend door??  It's like I can't get the heating system to work.

I pulled it apart once because they told me the blend door was bad after they diagnosed it.  The blend door is all steel and the motor is steel,(didn't know that at the time though) there is a plastic coupler that goes between them, that is what was actually broken.  Well I fixed it but there must have been something goofy with the motor because it broke it two weeks later.  What I did was pull the screws off the motor for the blend door that I could get to and then I cut off the one that I couldn't and just swapped which one had a pin and which ones had screws.  Replaced the motor and the plastic coupler, not the prettiest fix but it works just fine 2 years later.  The only reason you can't just take it out easy is because someone thought it was a good idea to use pins and screws and put the pin in the easiest place to get to and one of the screws basically right against the floor.  I tried everything to just unscrew the one screw but then gave up and used a dremel to do a little modifiing.

Got ya, thanks for explaining your experience.  Guess I would be better off to order the blend door, motor and the coupler if I only want to do this once ??  I'll have to take a closer look at those schematics for parts.

The blend door is solid steel, I didn't need it and I still have mine (since the crappy dealership told me that was broken and the motor was fine) if you really think you need one.

:suicide:My recirc broke this summer and I planed on just replacing the door but if this is true fix I might just plug the intake behind the dash. :suicide:
