Replace stock air box with Amsoil 4510 and heat shield
« on: January 02, 2009, 10:45:22 pm »
1) Remove the stock airbox.

2) Cut a piece of 4inch diamter PVC pipe about 3 inches long.

3) I used an old case lid from a 15 year old computer.  Remember the old 1/2 height tower cases?  It was the right width for the filter and I didn't have to fab up anything. Perfect!

4) Create a template for the shape you want the box.

5) Trace out the template and cut the box.  I used the air body saw I got for my birthday.  Finally a use for it!

6) Cut out the front with 4 inch circle to run the PVC pipe into the box. The old screw holes on the case made perfect tack weld holes!

7) This is what it looks like when you mate the pieces together.  The sheet metal rests on your PVC pipe, not the rubber or the filter.

8. Make 3 brackets so that the new air box clear the AC lines.  I didn't want it bouncing up and down on the line.  That's the high side incase you are wondering.  I taped the holes so that the bolts thread into the bracket.  There isn't enough clearance to get a bolt or nut under the box.  The brackets just bolt into the existing stock box studs.

9) Paint the box orange and enjoy!

Awesome job, and great write up!

Nice that you were also able to 'recycle' the tower case - great idea!

I bet it sounds a lot better as well!

Well Done!

Why orange?  I made the entire thing from stuff I had lying around.  The PVC pipe came from the old pile of washing machines, scrap metal and junk the previous owners had left.  The PC tower came from the computer my wife has been wanting me to get rid of for 5 years and the orange paint was the only color of High Heat paint I had in the work shop plus it looked cool.   :cowboy:

It took Amsoil 2 weeks to get my order here and when it finally arrived, the pre-filter was backordered so I'll be adding that later.

So have you noticed any difference in driving and sound since installing the Amsoil filter?

It whistles like an F-15 taxing down the runway.  I've caught myself (several times) mashing the pedal to the floor just to get the turbo to spool up.  :cho:

The highest PSI I've got the turbo up to is 11 according to the quadzilla.  I can't wait to hook up the big trailer and get it up to 25 PSI.
